JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya has stated that the recent trade ministry regulation, which removed the timber legality assurance system (SVLK) as a mandatory export requirement for products from the forestry industry, has been legally revoked.
"Our foreign ministry sent a verbal note (May 8) to the EU’s Jakarta office to inform them about the revocation of the trade ministry regulation," the minister explained in writing to FORESTHINTS.NEWS (May 11).
Previously, as reported by FORESTHINTS.NEWS (May 1), Minister Nurbaya stated that an inter-ministerial agreement had been reached to revoke the trade ministry regulation.
Furthermore, she also took the move of writing to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to assure him of the continued application of the SVLK in Indonesia.

Legal confirmation
Minister Nurbaya explained that the revocation of the recent trade ministry regulation was a legal confirmation of Indonesia's position to continue the application of the SVLK in the export of products from the forestry industry.
She also praised the leadership of Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi for consistently paying serious attention to the SVLK, including by sending the EU’s Jakarta office the aforementioned verbal note.
"We all greatly appreciate the inter-ministerial joint efforts that have accelerated the process of re-applying the SVLK," she said.
The revoking of the trade ministry regulation, the minister continued, means that the SVLK continues to serve as the only Indonesian timber legality assurance system that consistently supports the forestry industry while also acting as one of the most important instruments for preventing illegal logging.
Minister Nurbaya added that the President's key message was clear in that the SVLK is an essential part of the added value of the Indonesian forestry industry and so must continue to be applied even more robustly in an effort to boost export performance.
