JAKARTA (FORESTHINTS.NEWS) - During President Joko Widodo's visit to the Mentawir Nursery (Nov 2) in the country's new capital city site (IKN), Indonesian Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya discussed Indonesia’s major climate updates with the President in relation to Indonesia's preparations for COP28.

"In our discussion, while the President inspected the nursery’s progress, I reported several major updates on our climate actions as we approach COP28," Minister Nurbaya said.

"I also explained that the official inauguration of the Mentawir nursery will take place before COP28," the Minister affirmed.

According to Minister Nurbaya, she also reported on various agendas related to COP28, including ongoing forest and land rehabilitation efforts with a particular focus on mangroves.

"In addition, I presented a plan for establishing an international mangrove research center, to expand on our existing mangrove information center in Bali, in collaboration with several G20 countries. The concept and design have been discussed, and this will also be brought to COP28," Minister Nurbaya explained

Minister Nurbaya said that she had reported numerous highlights of the climate actions undertaken in the forestry and other land use (FOLU) sector, as well as other climate efforts regarding the Indonesian delegation's preparations for COP28.

Indonesia has its own legally binding FOLU Net Sink 2030 targets, which were launched at COP26. A number of leading countries, as well as several international organizations, are collaborating with Indonesia on an ongoing basis to help support achieving these climate goals at a certain level.

President’s messages

A hundred CEOs were also invited to the IKN site in which the Mentawir Nursery complex is located. President Jokowi used the occasion to deliver some key messages and concerns.

The President emphasized the intricate relationship between trees and CO2. Trees, through photosynthesis, naturally absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, converting it into energy and food for their growth. Therefore, increasing the number of trees plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions.

Since 2019, President Jokowi has stressed the need for intensive forest and land rehabilitation, emphasizing large-scale tree planting efforts. Notably, a significant nursery facility, the Rumpin Nursery, was inaugurated on June 10, 2022, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), and the APRIL Group.

This facility has a remarkable capacity, producing 13.4 million seedlings since its inauguration, with 9.8 million distributed for forest and land rehabilitation in West Java, Banten, and DKI Jakarta.

President Jokowi further urged the replication of such efforts in other regions, including North Sumatra's Lake Toba area, Likupang in North Sulawesi, and Labuan Bajo, with preparations underway in Mandalika, South Kalimantan, South Sumatra, and several other regions.

At Mentawir, construction is near completion with meticulous attention given to securing a stable water supply, road infrastructure, and other essential amenities. The official inauguration of this 15 million seedling capacity facility, as Minister Nurbaya pointed out, is scheduled to take place prior to the upcoming COP28 event.

This project, a joint effort with KLHK, PUPR, and ITM, Indominco Group, took some time to build due to challenging 'cut and fill' terrain but has now culminated in the construction of various structures, including a Mother Plant House, production house, pumping house, Germination House Area, and Acclimatization House Area, among others.

Environmental elements such as reservoirs and solar panels are integrated, and accompanying facilities like offices, prayer rooms, and staff housing are in the final stages of beautification.

The Mentawir Nursery currently holds nearly 4 million seedlings out of a planned 15 million. These seedlings encompass diverse plant varieties, including wood plants like belangeranulin, and balsa, non-wood forest products such as jackfruit and durian, and aesthetic plants like frangipani and flame tree.

President Jokowi is personally overseeing the Mentawir Nursery as a symbol of his commitment to constructing the IKN with a green orientation. Since early 2021, the President has advocated for these efforts, ensuring that green development is central to the IKN's direction.

This commitment is reflected in two key principles: the assurance of greenery in the IKN area, beginning with the provision of seedlings, and the guarantee that infrastructure and public facilities are constructed in compliance with environmental protection standards.

The focus on green development is already apparent in the ongoing tree planting initiatives. The government aims to continue expanding these efforts, ensuring that the new city is built with green development principles at its core.
